Justyna Sempruch

Psychotherapist

For 30 years now, I have lived and worked in various countries, travelled to culturally unique places and experienced various ways of understanding life. I have lived for many years in Austria, Switzerland, Canada and Poland. My personal experiences and professional knowledge, especially my work with Native American communities, have set me on a path of practice based on a holistic approach to self and the world. I work with international communities, businesses, and individuals from various cultural backgrounds. I specialise in the subject of family relations, love bonding, non-violent and intercultural communication. I have many years of experience working with teenagers on various paths towards self-discovery and search for identity and belonging. I support individuals in life transitions and help them find their own path of heart. I also help recover from addictions, codependency and loneliness. I'm particularly interested in relationships, how people make choices to be together, what kind of awareness they have around this and what makes them thrive. I am also deeply engaged in spiritual journeys and individual tropes for personal growth and belonging. I believe that peaceful, emotionally balanced, and community-focused values build healthy and truthful ties among individuals despite the many differences that divide us.

I am convinced that that we all carry some piece of the mystery within us. I love animals, the natural world is my second home, especially the element of water.

My educational background is in Comparative Literature, Philosophy, Social Sciences and Psychology. I received my PhD in 2003 from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, focusing on psychoanalysis and the Western 20th century women's literature with a central figure of the witch as a trace of women's diaspora. Subsequently, I conducted postdoctoral research on the diversity of family relationships at Basel (Gender Studies), York Univerisity (Toronto) and Queen's University (Kingston), where I served as a professor in the Department of Women's Studies (2005-8). My return to Europe (Poland) was marked by another turn in my career, as I focused on community-building work, and, in 2011 I registered People Matter Foundation, a non-profit organisation, where I had served for 20 years working with families in difficult life situations, such as abuse, challenges in relationships, alienation or depression. After years of intensive grass-root work, which included various cultural, artistic and social projects, I have also engaged in psychological aspects of human condition, realising that independently on cultures and political systems, there exist universal values as well as psychic mechanisms that govern our behaviour. In 2018-23, I trained in process-oriented psychology and worked with the Center for Integrated Medicine in Warsaw. I am a member of the Polish Association of Process Oriented Psychology Psychotherapists and Practitioners.

Currently, I am lecturing at the Faculty of Psychology at SWPS University, while from September 2023 I also started conducting humanistic-experiential therapy within INTRA Studies of Psychological Help and Education. My work is subject to supervision, i.e. regular consultations on the direction of work, progress and obstacles that arise during the therapy of individual clients.
